When writing fiction, compound prepositions should be used with care. They can make sentences too wordy.

- Good: Gail said she wanted to discuss something with me about my legal memo, so I could improve my writing.
- Bad: In the event of his arrival, in order to improve the room, we should...
- Good: When he arrives, to improve the room, we should...
